Learn about Finley's Green Initiatives

Summit Center

The Summit Health Center for Older Adults provides psychiatric services to individuals age 55 and older who are experiencing mental health problems. The services include 24-hour emergency hospital-based care as well as outpatient support services. Referrals can be made by anyone and free assessments are done professionally and confidentially. The center is designed to meet the needs of elderly adults and provides a unique atmosphere of comfortable and peaceful care by highly trained professionals.

The Finley Summit Center has been serving the tri-state area for 10 years. Individuals 55 and older are treated for a range of disorders such as anxiety, depression, thought disorders, dementia with behavioral disturbance and other mental health disorders. Summit Center provides services on their inpatient unit, in their outpatient clinics and in consultation throughout the Finley Hospital. Summit Center has also made it easier for people to access their services close to home. Psychiatrist, Dr. Roger Shafer, Summit Center's medical director has satellite clinics in Guttenberg and Maquoketa, Iowa. Katherine Gansen, ARNP has a clinic at Dubuque Internal Medicine that specializes in treating depression with more frequent follow up measuring the patient's progress, medication, titration and problem oriented therapy. Dr. Shafer and Gansen also visit 11 area nursing homes to address resident's mental health issues.

Our philosophy is a multidisciplinary team approach including psychiatrists, your primary care physician or a hospitalist, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, master level social workers, registered nurses, recreation therapist, and mental health technicians. Also, because the Summit Center is part of The Finley Hospital, our patients also have access to a wide array of other services such as physical, occupational and speech therapy. The Summit Center takes a holistic approach to their care looking at mental health issues, medical problems, nutrition, leisure skills, spirituality, therapy needs, patient and family education and others. Our care is geared towards the patient and individualized to meet the patient's needs.

The Summit Center also provides education to the community and surrounding areas. The Summit Center has several professionals that can provide education to groups or individuals. We will present on a variety of mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, dementia and others depending on your needs. We also provide free assessments for patients and families that think they may need some help with mental wellness.

Upon admission . . .
Patients and families find a unique behavioral healthcare program in an environment specially designed to meet the needs of older adults. The atmosphere is calm, caring, and very supportive. Each patient participates to the extent of his or her ability in the therapeutic, recreational, and social activities under the direction of a psychiatrist and social worker. Families and care takers are encouraged to participate in every aspect of a patient's recovery. Care conferences are held following admission and prior to discharge, in order to best help everyone involved to have a clearer understanding of what is needed for continued recovery.
