Keep the limb elevated

(HealthDay News) -- It's natural for a broken limb to swell just after the injury. If the limb is in a cast, this can make the cast feel snug near the injury, causing discomfort and possible pain.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons offers these suggestions to help ease swelling beneath a cast:

Rest the limb on a pillow, especially within the first 72 hours, so it is raised higher than your heart. This will encourage fluids to drain from the injury.
Gently and frequently move your fingers or toes on the injured limb. This will help prevent stiffness.
Place a soft ice pack around the cast.
